“Music is a big part of Nigerian and African culture, and I want to explore what goes into making the music, and the people involved in it. I want to take a deeper dive into their movement when they dance or listen to music, and how it makes them feel.””
Meet Nathan
Nathan Shaiyen (he/him) is a Nigerian creative producer, photographer, director, and cinematographer. His work is centered on telling stories that educate, captivate, and inspire. He captures the essence and diversity of individuals through bringing together different forms of media.
Nathan is the founder and CEO of Native[ ]Studios, whose primary purpose is to create content that speaks to the unique experiences of Nigerians and Africans. He was inspired by several creative brief themes for his Artist Development Fund commission, including Joyful Rhythm, to reflect the music and dance that play such a vital role in his culture. “Music is a big part of Nigerian and African culture, and I want to explore what goes into making the music, and the people involved in it,” he says. “I want to take a deeper dive into their movement when they dance or listen to music, and how it makes them feel.” His other possible themes include Taste of Heritage, exploring the preparation of a diverse array of foods within Nigeria, as well as Celebration of Self to capture the stories of people who are not afraid to be themselves in terms of their culture, religion, and sexual orientation.
