“The people that I’m photographing are gender non-conformist and queer individuals, and I like to present them with a reportage approach, with naturalistic lighting, in a tender, accepting way. They are rebellious and creating their own world, and that’s part of my journey as well.”
Meet Rose
Rose Callahan (she/her) is a New York-based photographer and director focusing on character-driven portraits of cultural tastemakers. With curiosity and empathy, she makes portraits that celebrate the transformative power of style.
Rose's portraits have been published in two monographs by Gestalten: “I am Dandy” and “We are Dandy”. The books are a deep dive into the world of global dandyism which presents a different view of masculinity from the mainstream, with all of its nuances and extravagances. Her Adobe Artist Development Fund project drew inspiration from the Celebration of Self creative brief. Rose says, “The people that I’m photographing are gender non-conformist and queer individuals, and I like to present them with a reportage approach, with naturalistic lighting, in a tender, accepting way. They are rebellious and creating their own world, and that’s part of my journey as well.”
Rose’s photographs have been exhibited at RISD Museum, and were featured in "Dandy Lion,” the world-traveling exhibit on Black dandyism by the Museum of Contemporary Photography, and accompanying book published by Aperture.
