“In my recent work, I've been thinking more critically about documenting my personal experience as a Black Asian woman being pregnant through the pandemic. This inspired me to photograph other families that have similar identities and experiences and reflect on the impact of the ongoing pandemic on people who are becoming parents.”
Meet Nadiya
Nadiya Nacorda (she/her) is a photography and video artist living in Virginia. She holds an MFA from Syracuse University. Her work explores the nuances and entanglements of inheritance(s), while considering themes of magic, affection, identity, and mothering, along with Black Asian feminine interiority and subjectivity.
Nadiya often collaborates with the women in her family, drawing inspiration from their relationships and shared history. She was pregnant during the pandemic, and her Family Life project for the Adobe Stock Artist Development Fund will explore maternity and its impact on relationships. She strives to capture the everyday and the extraordinariness of family life, while emphasizing multigenerational relationships and bonds. Nadiya is especially keen to help give voice to people with diverse backgrounds like her own. She says, “In my recent work, I've been thinking more critically about documenting my personal experience as a Black Asian woman being pregnant through the pandemic. This inspired me to photograph other families that have similar identities and experiences and reflect on the impact of the ongoing pandemic on people who are becoming parents.”
