Meet Maria

Maria Clara Machado (she/her) is an artist and author with a focus on people of color and the birth of art in Brazil. Her illustrations reflect her passion about Brazil, anti-racism, and fighting against religious intolerance. Maria’s family came from the Brazilian state of Bahia, and her colorful prints and designs are inspired by the art originated by Black people from her home state.

Maria’s Adobe Stock Artist Development Fund project will tell the story of how art emerged in Brazil, showcasing the intricate beads and jewelry crafted by the hands of Bahian women. Her illustrations will show what life is like for Black Brazilians today, providing a perspective on its past and present. Maria emphasizes that the beauty of Brazilian art and culture is often not recognized because of religious intolerance and racism, especially when it the work originates from religions with African roots.
