Add text to a retouched photo.

Use the powerful features of Lightroom and Photoshop together to edit a photo before adding a text overlay.

Get started

We will start in Lightroom to take advantage of the app’s user-friendly editing tools.

Apply a photo profile

Let’s give our photo a bold look by applying a profile. Open the Edit panel. Choose Profile > Browse All Profiles. Open the Modern category and select Modern 6.

Add text in Photoshop

Select File > Edit in Photoshop to open our edited photo in Photoshop. Select the Horizontal Type Tool from the toolbar. In the tool options bar, select Arial in Bold at size 120 pt. Check that the font color is set to white. Click on the image and type “EXPLORE” in all caps. Arrange the text with the Move tool. Commit the text by pressing Enter/Return or clicking the Commit checkmark in the Options bar. Our text is now a new layer.

Create a second text layer

Add another text layer by clicking in the image with the Horizontal Type tool, typing “MORE,” and pressing Enter/Return to commit. Use the Move tool to arrange the text, using the pink Smart Guides to align it. Edit the text by selecting the Type tool and highlighting “MORE.” In the tool options bar, select light blue. Change the “MORE” by selecting a light blue from the Color Picker and clicking OK. Press Enter/Return to commit.

Return to Lightroom

Save your design by selecting File > Save and then quit Photoshop. In Lightroom, find the Photo Grid. Our image is now part of a stack. Select the number two to view both versions—one with the edits from Lightroom only and the finished project we created in Photoshop.
